Joy and satisfaction infused every single one of Grizz’s cells as the last of his bliss became a pleasant echo in his body. Rolling onto his back, he pulled Elektra into his arms so her head rested on his chest.

“The timing could have been a little better,” he said, his voice still thick with half-sleepy lust. “But with you at my side, being on the run from the entire state’s security forces and the SBI doesn’t feel as daunting as it should.”

“Maybe you’re just not used to working with professionals,” she said with a self-satisfied smirk.

He closed his eyes for a moment and breathed her in. Her scent hung around her like an aura, and Grizz still couldn’t understand how something so new could be so comforting. He couldn’t imagine being away from her now, not after all of this. It was as if he’d never had the sense of taste before and then took a big bite of green curry from his favorite Indian place in LA.

It dawned on him that he’d probably never see that restaurant again, which didn’t bother him nearly as much as it should have. But the thought of her never being able to go back to her old life certainly did. His heart sank.

“What is it?” she asked, concern filling her beautiful black eyes.

“You felt that?”

“I felt something. You’re upset about something.” She shifted her body so her hands rested on his chest and her chin rested on her hands, watching him carefully in the stark light of the lanterns.

“We may not know much about each other,” he said carefully, “but I know enough to be certain you’re not going to like what I have to say. Just hear me out, okay?”

Her lower lids drew upward in a cross between a glare and a squint, but she remained silent.

“Elektra, I really should turn myself—”

“Nope.”

“Listen, you can lay low here until—”

“Uh-uh.”

“I’m try to save your life here. Okay? If you’ll just—”

“I said no, so shut up about it.”

Grizz growled and stared up at the jagged ceiling for a moment. “Elektra, if you stick with me, you’re as good as—”

“Dead as I’d be without you,” she interrupted, but her tone was softer in its resignation. “Face it, Grizz. You’re stuck with me. Where you go, I go. Period.”

She was right. Her attack on her coworkers had sealed her fate. And he couldn’t deny how comforting it was to have her with him during what should have been the worst day of his life. Cocking his arm behind his head, he peered at her and smiled.

“How the hell did I get so lucky?”

Her eyebrows shot up in excitement. “Ooh, you’re ready to get lucky again?”

He laughed and hugged her to him. “Give a guy a few minutes to recover, why don’t you.”
